Making a Disaster Plan for your Business

1/19/2012 11:32:48 AM
Who could have predicted that residents of Western Massachusetts would have been facing more damage from Hurricane Irene so soon after the tornadoes of June? Your business must be prepared with a disaster plan, so that if you suffer major damage you are prepared to start the recovery process and get a claim in on your commercial insurance. MA could experience more extreme weather events, so it’s not too late to get your disaster plan organized.

Try this checklist to get your started:

Get your important papers together so you can access them easily in a hurry. Make copies that can be stored in an alternative site.
Make a list of important contacts – include clients, wholesalers, your insurance agent, emergency numbers and contractors.
Set up regular evacuation drills and run them so you and your staff know what to do if the need arises.
Check through your insurance – make sure it’s up to date and your coverage is appropriate.
As soon as possible after a disaster, contact your clients, wholesalers and suppliers so they know how you’re placed. Keep them updated with progress reports as you begin the recovery process, so they remain aware of your most likely restart date.

This is just a beginning - there may be other things you can add. While the initial damage can be devastating, often it can be the lack of financial backup that spells the end of a business in the wake of a disaster, so make sure you have appropriate coverage in place as part of your commercial insurance. MA is not immune from these events – make sure you are prepared.
